YouTube - ''homeproject'' Channel

We are living in exceptional times. Scientists tell us that we have 10 years to change the way we live, avert the depletion of natural resources and the catastrophic evolution of the Earth's climate.

The stakes are high for us and our children. Everyone should take part in the effort, and HOME has been conceived to take a message of mobilization out to every human being.

For this purpose, HOME needs to be free. A patron, the PPR Group, made this possible. EuropaCorp, the distributor, also pledged not to make any profit because Home is a non-profit film.

HOME has been made for you : share it! And act for the planet.

One Day My Carbon-Neutral Prince Will Come

“One Day My Carbon-Neutral Prince Will Come”

Who would have guessed that the green revolution would come from… a Royal head?

Well, you have to face it: Prince Charles has been supporting the ecological cause in more ways than most politicians you can think of.

To begin with, Charles refused quite a few times to attend overseas events in order not to take a flight and increase his carbon emissions! Call it post-modern protocol… It is said that the Prince's household and activities are now carbon neutral.

Charles has also relentlessly defended slow food and organic agriculture against GMOs. It might have seemed funny at the beginning to some green believers, but it is not funny anymore, is it?

He pushed even further by opening his own food store last year. Thanks to this magnanimous decision, plebeians can buy their Royal Gelee from what observers consider as the “poshest veg shop”?

Now, the latest declaration he made is that we have “100 months to save the world”, otherwise the environment will be damaged irreversibly. That sounds like a scary statement, but I believe that this is the kind of warning we need to get our asses moving in the right direction..

However, the cherry on the cake has been kept for the end of this post. Charles has just been named the “world's best-dressed man”! Well, are we supposed to discuss ecology or fashion here? Hum, let’s say that Prince Charles has an evergreen style: Not so fashionable, therefore never out of fashion. He might even apply the 3R rule to his own Royal de Luxe wardrobe.

In conclusion, 2009 seems to be Prince Charles’ crowning year as he is being acknowledged worldwide as one of the Kings of Green. Mind you, today our Prince has come…

God save the Green*, Prince save the Green or… Green Save Us… You choose.

*expression from Nadege Winter

PS: Obviously, Prince Charles is also being criticized, but that might be the topic for a future post… (Eg Prince Charles: Green Hero or Hypocrite? www.theroyalforums.com/tag/prince-charles/)

Vik Muniz "The Beautiful Earth"

This show, featuring Vik Muniz's new 2008 series, Pictures of Garbage, will showcase a total of 40 works--most of which will be making their debut in Japan. Pictures of Garbage was made through a collaboration with the cleaning/waste collection staff at Jardim Gramacho--South America's largest refuse disposal facility, located in Rio de Janeiro. The employees acted as models for the works, which were drawn over an area as large as two basketball courts, and then photographed. We hope you enjoy the witty social ingenuity of Muniz's works.

China’s Green Beat

China’s Green Beat is the premiere green media outlet in China, providing information, education, and entertainment concerning China’s environmental issues, and engaging people to live greener, design greener, and invest greener. China’s Green Beat attracts viewers through its fun, engaging short films and seeks to “turn eyeballs into action” using various online community tools.

China’s Green Beat was founded by John Romankiewicz from the United States and Shane Zhao from China. John graduated from Northwestern University with a BS in Materials Science and Engineering and came to China to learn Chinese and develop a career in renewable energy and sustainable development. He applied for and received a Fulbright scholarship for further study on China’s environmental issues. At the same time, Shane, a fresh high school graduate from Heilongjiang province, was introduced to John by a friend. After witnessing the severe environmental toll his hometown suffered from rapid economic development, Shane began to think about issues surrounding China’s sustainable growth. Sharing their observations of both the increasing international focus on China’s environmental situation as well as the Chinese government’s focus on developing renewable energy sources, they decided to setup China’s first bilingual video podcast about the environment, aptly named, China’s Green Beat.

Climate Change NYC

THE HEAT IS ON: FACTS FROM THE AMERICAN MUSEUM OF NATURAL HISTORY
Changing Climate = Changing Atmosphere + Changing Oceans

Between the years 1600 and 2007, Earth's population grew to 6.07 billion people and fossil fuel use became widespread, increasing atmospheric carbon dioxide (CO2) from an estimated 274 parts per million to 385.

CO2 traps heat in the atmosphere, contributing to global warming, because it absorbs radiation from Earth's surface that would otherwise escape into space.

Earth's average temperature has risen about 1.8°F over the past 100 years and it will rise much more as long as CO2 emissions continue to increase at current rates.

Even if emissions were to stabilize today, temperature would continue to rise for several decades due to the delayed response of the climate system.

The years 1998, 2005, and 2007 are the warmest ever recorded according to historical weather data.

Over the past 50 years, the top 2,300 feet of the ocean has warmed about 0.18°F. The ocean's response to climate change has been slower than the atmosphere. Therefore, because the ocean stores most of Earth's heat, ocean temperature and sea level will continue to rise for several decades due to past greenhouse gas emissions, even if emissions are curbed today.

Climate change means more extreme weather. Over the last 60 years, heavy rain and snow storms have become 24% more frequent in the U.S. Warmer ocean waters also may make strong hurricanes even more powerful.

The ocean is acidifying. About 30% of the CO2 released by human activities over the past 200 years has already been absorbed by the ocean. Ocean acidification is expected to make it harder for corals, plankton and other shell-forming organisms to grow shells.

Deforestation contributes to global warming. Trees benefit the environment by absorbing CO2, but they return it to the atmosphere upon decaying or burning. Nearly 40% of Earth's land surface has been converted for human use; as a result, large quantities of CO2 have been released into the atmosphere-at the same time, fewer trees are left to absorb it.

Changing Climate = Changing Ice + Changing Land

Today, ice sheets are melting much faster than they were only a couple of decades ago. Greenland, for example, is losing about 50 cubic miles of ice per year. If the Greenland ice sheet was to melt completely, for instance, global sea level would increase to 23 feet because the transfer of ice from land into the ocean makes sea level rise. Although sea level rise of this size may take centuries or longer to complete, hundreds of millions of people would eventually feel the impact.

Ice shelves are massive platforms of ice floating on the ocean, especially around Antarctica. Scientists have learned that floating ice shelves act as dams to glaciers, which are actually flowing rivers of ice. After Antarctica's Larsen B ice shelf broke up in 2002, glaciers behind the shelf began flowing into the sea much more quickly.

Sea level has risen about 7 inches over the last 100 years, mostly due to the expansion of water as it warms. Every foot of sea-level rise translates to 100 feet of shoreline loss on the Eastern U.S. coast. Predictions vary, but future sea-level rise could range from 7 inches to more than 40 inches by 2100.

The primary effects of sea-level rise are increased flooding during storm surges and coastal erosion and submergence. Some of the world's largest, most densely populated cities are located in these regions; indeed, 634 million people live within 33 vertical feet of sea level.

Of all the energy reaching Earth from the Sun, about two-thirds is absorbed by land, ocean and atmosphere, and one-third is reflected back into space. Most of the absorbing takes place in the tropics, where dark, plant-covered land and dark ocean predominate. Much of the reflecting happens at the poles, with their bright coverings of snow and ice.

The last few decades have seen larger areas of the world enduring longer—and drier—droughts. One reason is that warmer soils lose their moisture faster, intensifying drought conditions. Also, warming tends to cause more intense but less frequent rain storms and changes local weather patterns.

Many regions around the globe have seen a sharp increase in the number of wildfires over the past several decades because of climate change. In the American West, spring-summer temperatures averaged 1.6°F higher between 1987 and 2003 than in the previous 15 years. That same span saw four times as many wildfires, many at higher elevations.

A Matter of Scale

For hundreds of millennia, humans connected tightly to the land and the life forms their survival depended upon, because that was how it had to be. Failure to connect was not an option; if you didn’t know how plants grew, how animals bred, how rivers ran, how the seasons and the weather changed, then you did not survive. In some parts of the world – the Native American tribal lands of West Coast USA, the dense forests of West Papua, the deep valleys and jagged mountains of northern India – these connections remain, and cling on despite the best efforts of those who seek to gain more from the land than “mere” survival. This connection has ebbed away from the majority of humanity, in many cases to the extent that people feel nothing for anything humans have not created themselves. But we cannot eat concrete; we cannot breathe television; we cannot drink money.

A Matter Of Scale is a free, online book which you can read here, or download to read whenever you like.

Commitment to Sustainable Computing & Clean Energy 2030

Google's mission is to organize the world's information and make it universally accessible and useful. Hundreds of millions of users access our services through the web, and supporting this traffic requires lots of computers. We strive to offer great internet services while taking our energy use very seriously. That's why, almost a decade ago, we started our efforts to make our computing infrastructure as sustainable as possible.

Today we are operating what we believe to be the world's most efficient data centers.

The graph below shows that our Google-designed data centers use considerably less energy - both for the servers and the facility itself - than a typical data center. As a result, the energy used per Google search is minimal. In fact, in the time it takes to do a Google search, your own personal computer will use more energy than we will use to answer your query.

But sustainability is about more than electricity, so we've gone beyond just reducing our energy consumption. Before the end of 2008 two of our facilities will run on 100% recycled water, and by 2010 we expect recycled water to provide 80% of our total water consumption.

C'est notre enjeu, notre ambition alors croyez-moi : Watch this movie ! »

Clean Up Australia

Clean Up The World, an initiative of Clean Up Australia discovered that over 80% of all office paper printouts end up in the bin - a statistic the environmental organization found disturbing and wanted to act on.

DDB decided to tackle this problem head on through the simple use of a downloadable desktop image that would act as a constant reminder for people to think before they print.

The desktop image symbolises what it is you’re actually printing via a microsite that reaches people directly at the source of the problem – their computer.

Paris to Launch Subscription Electric Car Sharing Service

From buildings to airports, Paris is looking towards greening up.

And now, Paris Mayor Bertrand Delanoë announced last week that by the end of 2009, Parisians can expect to see about 4,000 electric cars throughout the city that will be available for rent through a sharing service called Autolib.

Similar to the city’s bike* sharing service Vélib’, these EVs will be available for pick-up and delivery at 700 spots around the city. Users can hop online to specify where they’ll return the car, and they’ll be guaranteed a parking spot in that location. The subscription service would cost about $390 a month, with a 60 mile-per-day limit – pricy but considering the cost of owning, maintaining, parking, and filling up a car with fuel in a busy city, the price and mileage both seem reasonable.

Greenpeace x Guide to Greener Electronics

The guide ranks the 18 top manufacturers of personal computers, mobile phones, TV's and games consoles according to their policies on toxic chemicals, recycling and climate change.

The ranking criteria reflect the demands of the Toxic Tech campaign to the electronics companies. Our three demands are that companies should:

* clean up their products by eliminating hazardous substances;
* takeback and recycle their products responsibly once they become obsolete.
* Reduce the climate impacts of their operations and products.

The use of harmful chemicals in electronics prevents their safe recycling when the products are discarded. Companies scored marks out of 51 this has then been calculated to a mark out of 10 for simplicity.

Follow the more link beside each company for the full details of their score. The full criteria for scoring the companies is available as well as in criteria on chemicals explained in depth. Download the full pdf of the scorecard.

Each score is based solely on public information on the companies website. Companies found not to be following their published policies will be deducted penalty point in future versions of the guide.

The guide is updated every 3 months. The current edition was published on the 25th June 2008.
